Your iTunes music folder stores two representations of a song file: the digital content of the music itself (AAC, MP3) and an XML file that describes the attributes of the file, things like “artist”, “title”, “recently played”, “rating”, “genre”, etc.
Similar iTunes needs to access only this XML file – typically named “iTunes Music Library”. On Windows, the default location of this file is C:\Documents and Settings\default\ My Documents\MyMusic\iTunes\iTunes Music. While an individual song can a create large files of several MB, the XML file is by comparison very small… for example, a 1,000 song iTunes Library XML file runs <2MB. Once your XML file arrives on our servers, Similar iTunes indexes all the data about your listening habits. Next, your library is compared and given a relevance and weighting for association with other music libraries submitted to Similar iTunes. You are assigned a profile, or multiple profiles, based on others like you with similar audio collections. You are then presented with summaries, graphs and lists about how others like you listen. |

The Concept
Admit it. We’ve all done it… nosing around a friends CD collection, browsing their bookshelf and photos, or peeking in the medicine cabinet (which got not one, but two ‘Jerry’s in trouble: Jerry Seinfeld and Jerry Stahl of Permanent Midnight infamy). It’s human nature - we’re curious about people, and the objects they collect tell us “amateur anthropologists” something about them – and about us. Similar iTunes is designed to recapture that spirit of musical discovery. And best of all it is completely legal, anonymous and simple.
In the digital music age, one of the great joys of a peer-to-peer network is seeing not just the song or artist you searched for, but the owner’s entire digital music collection. The process of discovery that Napster, Kazaa, Limewire, et al provided was eye-opening, and broadened many a listeners musical palette – a good thing for the listener certainly, and arguably for the artist as well. If the newly discovered song happened to fatten their MP3 collection… well, we won’t weigh in on that debate. |
